Equipment

  • 1 Baking sheet
  • 1 small brush (for olive oil)
  • 1 medium mixing bowl
  • 1 Sharp Knife
  • 1 Cutting board

Ingredients

  • 1 whole baguette sliced into ½-inch pieces
  • 4 medium roma tomatoes diced
  • 2 ripe avocados diced
  • ½ cup red onion finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • ¼ cup fresh basil chopped
  • ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic reduction or glaze

Instructions

  • Prepare and Preheat the Oven: Begin by setting your oven to 400°F (200°C). Preheating ensures the bread crisps evenly and develops a golden finish.
While the oven is warming up, gather your ingredients and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it to prevent sticking.
This small step makes cleanup easier and keeps your baguette slices perfectly crisp.
  • Slice and Arrange the Baguette: Using a sharp bread knife, slice the baguette into ½-inch thick pieces.
Uniform thickness helps the bread toast at the same rate, preventing some slices from becoming overly crunchy while others remain soft.
Lay the slices in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each so the hot air can circulate and crisp them evenly.
  • Brush with Olive Oil: Take a small pastry brush and lightly coat the top side of each baguette slice with extra virgin olive oil.
The oil not only gives the bread a subtle richness but also helps it toast to a beautiful golden brown with a satisfying crunch.
Avoid oversaturating the bread; a thin, even layer is enough to achieve the perfect texture.
  • Toast the Bread: Place the baking sheet into the preheated oven and bake for 5–7 minutes, or until the slices are crisp and golden on the edges.
Keep a close eye on the bread during the last couple of minutes to avoid burning, as every oven heats slightly differently.
When done, remove from the oven and set aside to cool slightly while preparing the topping.
  • Chop the Fresh Ingredients: On a cutting board, dice the roma tomatoes into small cubes for easy bite-sized toppings.
Next, cut the avocados into similar-sized pieces—choosing ripe but firm avocados ensures they hold their shape instead of turning mushy.
Dice the red onion finely to balance its flavor without overpowering the dish.
Mince the garlic and chop the fresh basil leaves to release their fragrance.
  • Combine the Topping Mixture: Transfer the tomatoes, avocado, onion, garlic, and basil into a medium mixing bowl.
Drizzle with olive oil, then sprinkle in the salt and black pepper.
Using a large spoon or spatula, gently toss the ingredients together until evenly coated.
Be careful not to over-mix—the goal is to keep the avocado pieces intact while blending the flavors.
  • Assemble the Bruschetta: Take the toasted baguette slices and spoon a generous portion of the avocado-tomato mixture on top of each.
Make sure each slice gets a balanced amount of avocado, tomato, onion, and basil for the best flavor in every bite.
You can assemble just before serving to keep the bread from getting soggy.
  • Drizzle with Balsamic Reduction: For the finishing touch, drizzle a thin stream of balsamic reduction (also called balsamic glaze) over the bruschetta.
This adds a sweet, tangy contrast that enhances the freshness of the avocado and tomatoes.
If you prefer more control, you can use a squeeze bottle to make neat zigzags across the top.
  • Serve and Enjoy Immediately: Arrange the finished avocado bruschetta on a serving platter and enjoy right away while the bread is still crisp.
This appetizer is best served fresh to maintain its bright flavors and crunchy base, making it ideal for parties, family gatherings, or a quick snack at home.

Notes

  • Use ripe but firm avocados to prevent the topping from turning mushy.
  • Roma tomatoes work best because they are firm and juicy with minimal seeds.
  • Slice the baguette evenly to ensure uniform toasting.
  • Drizzle the balsamic reduction just before serving to avoid soggy bread.
  • Adjust salt and pepper to taste; fresh herbs enhance flavor without extra seasoning.
  • Can be served warm or at room temperature.
  • Ideal for parties, quick appetizers, or light meals.
  • Brush bread lightly with olive oil; too much will make it greasy.
